Quickstart Guide, Part 2: Best Practices

You can use Ideanote in a myriad of ways, and in my time I’ve seen some wildly creative uses. There are no right or wrong answers, but for this part of the guide I’d like to share with you a couple of things our customers have found to work incredibly well.

Asking the right question, the right way

At Ideanote we’re big fans of something called the How Might We (HMW) method, and a minute from now, I’m willing to bet you will be, too.

The HMW method helps you brainstorm new opportunities using the power of language.

How does it work? By applying a different perspective to insights you already have, you can reframe these insights, turning them into new thought-provoking opportunities.

Here’s an example:

Imagine you’re in the waffle business, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and you and your team want to explore new business ideas! 💖

Instead of simply asking “Can we come up with something for Valentine’s Day?”, you might then come up with one of the following How Might We questions to get your team thinking differently, and come up with new, valuable ideas:

✔ How might we reshape our waffles to convey different emotions?
✔ How might we create the perfect waffle to share?
✔ How might we disrupt the status quo of today’s waffle toppings?

Make sure your How Might We questions aren’t too narrow or too broad. They should provide your team with focus, yet leave enough room to explore even the boldest of ideas 🚀 🌖

Keeping People Engaged

Launching new missions is a an important part of keeping things fresh and interesting.

How often you should launch new missions may vary from team to team, so I suggest you test and tune the dials yourself.

To get started, I’d recommend adding new missions as you would logs to a camp fire. You keep the flames of engagement burning by adding new missions regularly 🔥🔥🔥

  1. Start by launching two or three missions
  2. Add a new mission every week for two-three weeks
  3. Adjust this as you get a feeling for how your team works

Getting Others Aboard

If you’re the only one who’s creating new missions, you might miss out on exploring new exciting business areas.


  • Invite more people to come up new missions
  • Share this guide with them to help them get started

As a default setting, everyone on your Space can create their own missions and invite people to contribute to them. This way everyone directly benefits from the vast sea of creativity and knowledge that exists in your team or organisation.

However, if you must, you can also restrict user privileges for your Space, so only admins can create new missions.

As an admin, you can do this in your Space settings:
